Falla 1915 Solidarity Concert

29 December 2021 · Bilbao Philharmonic Society (Bizkaia)

At the end of 2019 BilbaoSinfonietta embarked on a voyage with the electrifying music of Manuel de Falla. It ended with the presentation of their first recording for the IBS Classical label. This new version of El Amor Brujo puts the focus on Flamenco singing and is completed by the adaptation of Siete Canciones Populares Españolas for a chamber orchestra by our resident composer Francisco Domínguez. The work —written in 1914 for voice and piano— takes on new life more than a century later in an unprecedented format thanks to the collaboration of the “cantaora” María Toledo, one of the most relevant names in the contemporary Flamenco and classical music scene.

The recording of Siete Canciones Populares Españolas was particularly dedicated to Flamenco singing, embodied in the voice of María Toledo

The programme of this solidarity concert was completed with a piece by José Luis Greco, Visit Spain! —an absolute premiere for marimba and nine instruments, with the presence of the author— and featuring Conrado Moya, currently one of the world’s best  marimba players.

Directed by Iker Sánchez Silva, BilbaoSinfonietta presented the record on 29 December in Bilbao Philharmonic Society at a charity concert for people affected by the volcano of La Palma, with the support of Bizkaia Provincial Council, Bizkaia Red Cross, the Food Bank and the Vizcaína Aguirre Foundation.
