Arnold Schönberg: Pierrot Lunaire

15 October 2019 · Fundación BBVA, Bilbao (Bizkaia)

BilbaoSinfonietta staged one of the most relevant works of the 20th century: Pierrot Lunaire by Arnold Schönberg, at the 10th edition of the Fundación BBVA Contemporary Music Cycle in Bilbao.

Based on a cycle of 21 poems written by A. Giraud, in Pierrot Lunaire, Schönberg masterfully brings a new approach to opera, playing with “Sprechstimme” (spoken singing) and with the colours of the musicians who sometimes play as soloists and at other times, accompany the mood of the text itself.

Along with this great work, during the concert, BilbaoSinfonietta incorporated the ideas of three Basque composers into three of the pieces of the work by Schönberg, in the form of recreations that preceded Pierrot Lunaire.
